Post Rock is one among my favourite genres altogether. But it is unfortunate that this is one betwixt the overlooked genres as well. Over the years I have heard a lot of Post Rock albums, majority(or all) of them being Instrumental bands. One of the recent addition to my ever-growing list is Patrick Grant. . The main reason for which is the beauty within sound which takes a person through multiple dimensions. Patrick Grant, a successful composer is known for his skills to temporarily displace people into an imaginary universe. His music is soul warming and at times so strange that the world surrounding us acts as if its changing. A sequence of waves was the first album that I listened to from him. After that, the news of him re-releasing an album later on this year kept me waiting.
Patrick Grant is known for his wise inclusion of Classical and Orchestral elements on his tracks which give that cinematic kick. There’s nothing different in the case of FIELDS AMAZE and other sTRANGE music as well. It’s as if watching a movie with no dialogues, no picture but through emotions portrayed on the songs. Minimalistic approach to music is evident on this album and the Homemade gamelan on “Fields Amaze” just took his vision on music to a whole new level. Constantly creating orchestral and electronic switches by keeping low-key jazz-esque drumming on the background, there’s a lot of elements to be “discovered” on his track. For instance, in the case of Imaginary Horror Film – Part I he uses chamber music to give that spooky dark tune and in the case of Visible tack of Turbulance(the song that precedes the former), the beautiful mix of Flute and Clarinet spreads the power of folk and from there the next track being spooky…brilliant vision indeed!
The amount of fresh vibes I got from listening to this album is countless and I did get a gist of what Patrick is trying to narrate through the perfectly laid instrumentation. This re-release will surely be a great start for him this year, though its mid 2018 – you never know when he’s about to release new music. So, its better to follow him on his socials. As far as FIELDS AMAZE and other sTRANGE music goes, it is a brilliant album to chill-out to. Highly recommend it to anyone irrespective of their musical inclinations. The album releases on October 1st. Make sure to keep an eye out for it.
