Its that time of the year where people start putting out their “AOTY” list and personally speaking, it is hard for me to put up an AOTY list considering the number of quality releases released this year. Though that list had to wait, before crafting and finalising here is an album that is potential AOTY for me. I have always cherished the Australian music scene. Uncovering the depths of Australian Underground music scene might not be an easy task for me, so I will leave that for “professional” music critics. But, as a fan I’m more than happy to introduce the rising Progressive-Metal band Future Corpse.
With all honesty, I have had this album spinning on my playlist non-stop for over a week and I’m still listening to while I’m writing this. The reason why I like this band is they play a distinct style of Progressive Metal that kinda merge into the softer side of Mathcore except for the fact that their music is less djenty and the emphasis is laid mainly on the melody. Their 2018 effort, Culture Ruins Everything Around is an epitome of Modern Prog goodness. The sound is very distinct and the riffs are catchy. The album which consists of 7 tracks is the follow-up to their debut effort which was an hour long album that dwells deep into their sound and how they ended up writing Culture Ruins Everything Around.
The interesting fact about their music is the less djenty guitar structure which kinda amazed me. For instance the song, Hyper Normal Living, a catchy tune which has a controlled chaotic mid breakdown which is less djenty but more melodic at the same time chaotic. Not Dillinger Escape Plan chaotic-chaotic but akin to what a Progressive Metal band would sound like if they incorporated some chaotic patterns. The second track, An Abject Failure has probably one of my favourite guitars parts that I came across this year. The intro has a technical riff that is so catchy that it makes me forget about my existence! Moreover, the outro has an exceptional breakdown which also incorporates some of their technical “nerdy” stuff.
Once I finished that particular track, I was surprised why this band is not popular. These guys have huge amount of musicianship and are a well-deserved contenders to have mainstream stardom. Though I was a huge fan on what they did in Abject Failure, the next 6 minute track was nothing shirt of being called the best one on the album. Main reason for which is that this one song from them explains their sound and musicianship. For instance we have an impeccable bass tone coupled with a great riff. As a drummer, my interest has always been on the drums and I must say, the drums on this song or on this album in general is pretty tight and beautiful. The groove kicks in at the right moment and the places where math-y transitions are necessary, the drummer just nails it.
There’s much more to say about this album but I could guarantee that it’s one of those albums that a person wouldn’t regret spending money on. Exceptional musicianship and beautiful tracklist. I highly recommend this album and it won’t be a surprise if this album ended up on my AOTY list as it deserves to be on the list. PS: Definitely on the Top 10!
