The mini CD with the mysterious title “Ahi Cab” is the first IDOLOS release. The band hides information about themselves, from what I readed, they reside in France, but the first song is in Spanish language, so I do not know what their roots are. The line-up of the group given at the end of the review may not be quite accurate (I deduced it from the vague description in the booklet). In the insert to the disc there are references to the Cosmos (including pulsars and the planet Venus).
The aforementioned song opening the album is an intro, full of mystery and reflection. We hear delicate guitar and keyboards, and against this background electronically transformed statements in Cervantes language. The next three songs of this short album are dynamic, sometimes aggressive atmospheric black metal.
The tracks are long, they are not based on one idea, they mix different ingredients: playing motorical, very aggressive, but also heavy and even also calm or melancholic. An interesting procedure is the use of rock patents, including in the track “The Deeds Above”. At the end of the track there is an extensive, typically rock guitar solo. And in several other places we find melodies and ways of using instruments typical for rock.
However, “Ahi Cab” is primarily aggression and power, but at all times with a preserved space component. The dominant mood is sadness, but it does not reach the extent of breakdown, depression.
The musicians play on an average good level, which also applies to the singer’s black scream. The drummer works well with the drum machine (which is not always successful).
All IDOLOS members, despite the use of simple means, contribute to an interesting result. First of all, they have their own separate style (though not some revolutionary). And it’s not easy in black metal. This is successful debut.
