If there is anything that can get us through these tough times easier, it would be Music. Fortunately, many artists are putting out new music despite the pandemic. At times, it seems as if the entire quarantine and pandemic situation has given the artists a chance to reflect on their creative side. Not that the music released by them prior to the lockdown was uninteresting, but the fact that it has given some time for bands to regroup by taking time off of touring. The reason why I’m saying this is that the majority of the songs that I’ve heard from some artists this year is very different from their previous stuff.
Among them is Sluka, an American Progressive/Alternative Rock quartet. After a successful release of their 2019 full-length, the band released a surprise single this month entitled “Vampire’s Ball”. Led by the multi-faceted singer/songwriter Christopher Sluka, the band has taken a different approach to this single. In my opinion, when compared to the full-length, the single is more compelling and relatable. Relatable in the sense, the message that it delivers aptly fits the current situation.
“Vampire’s Ball” is about finding beauty within the horror, eloquent of the current horrific situation of the world. When it comes to the instrumentation, the drums, and guitars stand tall. Both of them compliments Christopher’s vocals. An eerie-electronic-esque beat is really catchy and drives the chorus forward. Although I expected a bit more drums on the song, I think the band did a great job not overdoing it. Since, the song is all about conveying the beauty within horror. If the drummer is to go all guns blazing with stereotypical blast beats, and fiery fast drum fills, the song would’ve not stayed true to its message.
Speaking of Christopher Sluka, the brainchild of Sluka, he is not only proficient in music but also in art. His oil paintings are featured in galleries of New York, San Diego, Tokyo and Milan. While he is not indulged in art, he can be seen at his own flight school in San Diego – Christopher is an accomplished aircraft pilot. In addition to that, he is also a long-distance runner. To sum up, he always strives to keep himself busy all the time!
But, this single is not written in a hurry. It is clear that Christopher & Co have given this single the time it deserves. Being able to write a song that is capable of telling a story is a great achievement for any songwriter. Sluka has that gift! Overall, “Vampire’s Ball” is a crushing single that will surely keep the listeners hooked. I’m really looking forward to seeing what the band releases next.
