As an avid music admirer, I keep my interests broad. In fact, last month, out of curiosity, I searched the history of how Marshmello – just to understand how he popped into the mainstream media out of nowhere. Well, that’s a discussion for another day. Because, today, I have a rare gem to present. A duo, who promise to hold the attention of their listeners with their unique dark and ambient synth rock sound. The reason as to why I believe this would be a good listen to Metalheads, is that, the amount of experimentation and songwriting involved in this album will surely be inspirational for those who actually write their own music. Perhaps, add their sinister flavour to your Black/Sympho Death side-project.

Gone From My Sight comprises of producers Quinn Ramond and Keith Watts. They are experienced, and this is not their first outing in the music industry. Prior to the formation of Gone From My Sight, both of them used to work with other artists. However, unfortunately that didn’t go well for them, as they decided to quit and start their own venture instead of being studio performers! Good for them, in my opinion, they have excelled as musicians. If I’m not wrong, they have an album “Twenty Fourteen” released prior to this. So “Twenty Twenty” is their sophomore effort. In my opinion, by now an artists should have established a definitive style.

The album comprises of 9 tracks, with a total running time a little shy of 40 minutes. Starting with “Chrome Dynasty”, the duo tries to put their sound out to the audience. Although I personally would have had it short and sweet, “Chrome Dynasty” lasts for 6 minutes – but they have made the complete use of this time. I wasn’t bored, instead I was curious to know how they are going to progress towards the end of the track. Their sound is best explained as ambient synth rock with a tinge of lo-fi dark tune vibes. In terms of instrumentation, you’ll hear a lot of different layers. For instance, in the song “Damon”, they have like 5 or 6 layers of instruments packed in just 4 minutes. Perhaps, the best track on the album, “Damon” is everything that Gone From My Sight promises to sound like!

I might have gone too far, because there’s a lot going in this album, that it makes it hard for me to differentiate tracks and talk about them individually. But there’s one particular track that I missed. “Selfish” is a more dynamic version of Gone from my sight’s sound. Not only is it dynamic, it is also crisp and power-packed, just what I like in my music! The chants/vocals add a unique touch to the song, as I keep coming back to the track for the brilliant instrumentation but stay for the chants – just to sing along.

Overall, the album is a brilliant and innovative take on a saturated genre such as Electronic. However, I expected the album to be more memorable and engaging. Of course, there are a lot of parts on this album that would make you go “Wow”, but there are only a few parts that would compell you to hit that replay button. On the brighter side, I like the consistency on the tracks. There’s not a single track on the album wherein I expected more of the guitar/bass sound than the electronic. It sounds balanced. Something that is very hard to pull it off at one try! To sum up, I will surely keep Gone from my sight on my 20/20 sight for their follow up releases. Expecting more of such creative and fresh sound!
