Electric Sister is a band that I had the immense pleasure to have come across last year. I got introduced to them through their 2020 single, “Miss American Vampire”. While it was an exceptional take on Hard Rock, it left me wanting for more. Before we get into this track, here is a refresher, and a small info for those who don’t know about Electric Sister. The quintet is based out of Oakland, and they rose into fame with their hit 2011 debut album, “The Lost Art of Rock & Roll”. For some reason, the band took a break and made an emphatic return with “Miss American Vampire” – which served as a perfect comeback single. Taking the momentum forward, the band shifted gears with another single “Golden Whores”.
This time relishing the angsty side of Rock – almost like a rusty Heavy metal sound with some Hard Rock mixed to it that gives it an Alt Metal sound while still staying true to the band’s original style. The band tries to incorporate the good old classic rock – which is why I believe they have their own sound – not sticking to the stereotypical sound of Hard Rock. The main riff is very catchy, and sets the tone for the rest of the track. The deliverance matches well with the background instrumentation – and how well it drives the song forward starting from a mid-tempo to a more swift paced.
What I liked the most on the instrumentation is the drums. The reason why I say so, is because of the creativity and the intent of drummer to keep himself busy. Although the guitars and the vocals seems to hold the stage, the drums at the background adds zest. The drummer could’ve easily gone with a 4/4 beat or anything simple, but there are enough ghost notes, cymbal accenting and groove. Kudos to Drummer! Talking about guitars – riffs, solo and creative licks, all keep the song together.
It’s the riff that carries the momentum, and it is a solo – mid song, that brings out the prowess of Electric Sister’s songwriting. Overall, “Golden Whores” is a song that reflects how the band has matured over the 9 year long hiatus. Although the previous single “Miss American Vampire” revealed an essence of it, “Golden Whores” solidifies. Really looking forward to see what the band is capable of doing next.
