While the genres such as Pop and EDM hits a saturation point, Rock and Metal stays strong and fresh. The reason for this is because of the amount of creativity that bands showcase in their music. Nowadays, it is hard to find a band that stay straightforward Hard Rock or Metal. There’s always an element of surprise that comes with their songs. For instance, Progressive Rock took off very well – which attracts both Prog Snobs(who are more inclined to the tasty guitar licks and solos) and Hard Rock enthusiasts(who love guitar riffs). Although Prog Rock may sound a bit too “normal” for many, there are some artists who go above and beyond to achieve a unique tone – such as blending the prowess of Hard Rock and Post Grunge. Yes, you heard it right! This unholy, yet wise blend is the core of Red Skies Mourning.
Red Skies Mourning is a solo act based out of Maryland, fronted by Chris Aleshire. The topic of discussion for today is the band’s newly released single “Signs from you”. Even though it was released back in November 2020, I only got to know of it recently(I am glad that I found them!). Chris’ musicianship and lyricism is on its peak on this 4 minute tracker. While the said Post Grunge – Rock blend keeps you immersed in the sound, the lyricism is touching and would definitely make you listen to the track again to get into the mind of Aleshire to understand the song’s background. He wrote the song after he found out the trauma that one of his closest friends had after they lost their daughter. The daughter reportedly committed suicide. These were Chris’ comments on the song:
“Putting myself in his shoes and also having had close friends commit suicide, people tend to push things off, be more self-absorbed, not seeing or noticing friends in need. So the lyrics directly describe continually both the What Could I have Done? and also knowing they are in a better place but yet the guilt will stay with you always. I am a US Marine Corps Veteran, so this is for suicide awareness and PTSD.”
The gist of what he conveys in the song is to keep in touch with our friends and to enquire whether they would want a person to talk to. In my opinion, this is a very sensitive topic that not many bands touch on – yet very important one to be discussed as well. To help Chris forge this master piece JR Richards of Dishwalla assisted with Arrangement/Backing Vocals, Ryan Elwood played the Drums, and Andreas Landeck on Bass/Guitar. All top-notch studio musicians, coming together to make an art that will remain one of the best in Red Skies Mourning’s discography.
A perfect song to tease for an upcoming EP. Chris has confirmed that this song will be a part of the band’s 2021 release, entitled “Misguided By Fate”. Really looking forward to see what he has in store for us on the EP.
