Going into 2021, I wished to retain one thing from 2020. Yes, this might sound weird, but hold on…I can explain. 2020 was a great year for Rock and Metal – a lot of new releases and comebacks. It was the first time that I had to spend a lot of time contemplating before asserting to the AOTY. So, going into 2021, I wanted to retain the dynamic, and ever-so active music industry. It is May, and it is safe to say that, my wish was fulfilled! I had already reviewed some of the finest releases of this year. But this time, it is going to be a bit different. We are going to talk about a single, recently put out by an Orlando based Rock band, Blueanimal.
Blueanimal’s story is interesting – they weren’t a full-fledged band until 2018. The band started as a side project of Luke Elms and Matt Lube, in 2015 – and surprisingly they dropped a killer of an album without having many resources – which tells me the musicianship of the duo. After becoming a proper band, they released their first Rock/Alternative album in 2018 entitled “Hollow Heart”. It introduced Blueanimal as a collective to the world. Now, similar to what the majority of the bands do after debut – Blueanimal started experimenting with their sound. Their magnum opus going into their next effort was to write two albums simultaneously – the first of which is “The Figment that was me”.
“On my mind”, single taken off of this album, clearly shows the extent of experimentation done by the band. It is not necessarily an unconventional sound, but something darker than their previous albums. Lead Vocalist and the founding member, Luke Elms told that they wanted to have a grunge-inspired sound, and needless to say – they have achieved that! This means – no “heavy” riffs and crazy drum fills – but moody instrumentation to compliment Luke’s deliverance. However, the best part of the song is that the riffs though a bit mellow for this genre, sound really good and matches the mood of the song.
Overall, the track has been an eye-opener – it shows how the direction of the band on their third album, and possibly the fourth one, that they will be writing simultaneously! A change was much needed, as hard rock often sounds boring after a while – Kudos to Blueanimal and their musicianship to try something new. I’ll be looking forward to the album, which is supposedly set for a June 4 release.
