Camaraderie plays an important role in bands – and oftentimes if you pay close attention, you can feel the bond between the members through how well they structure the song giving every section so much care that it complements the part done by their counterpart. Some may find it philosophical or unreal, but when you lend your ears to bands like Thorslund you’ll understand the difference. Hailing from Ontario, Canada, now based out of Hollywood, California Thorslund is a duo comprising of brothers Jeff and Tom Thorslund. While Jeff plays the strings and vocals, Tom handles the percussion and does some backing vocals. They released a single back in November, entitled “Firecracker Man”, a song that had to be covered to continue my coverage of 2021 hits.
Talking about their sound, the brothers play a very distinctive rock and roll, which does have some melodic elements similar to Grunge bands. The song starts with a very playful intro – a very catchy guitar section, which reminds me of Aerosmith and Van Halen. The intro riff then opens up to a very melodic section which is then driven by the vocals. Tom does a great job in the background, playing thundering yet controlled drum segments – controlled in a way it doesn’t shadow the riffs.
The chorus is catchy and the words “Firecracker Man” will surely get chanted aloud when they play live shows. Yes, considering the fact that they are only two and it would be hard to see them perform live unless they have a person filling in for tours, nonetheless it would great catching them live playing this single! The song is an immersing experience, it is not on all songs that you forget keeping a track the time. 3 minutes the song promises felt like only 3 seconds and before I even knew, the song is being looped and played on repeat! The brothers have done a brilliant job creating a vibe.
With a full-length around the corner early this year, Thorslund has the potential to scale to greater heights with their old-school rock sound, pleasing people like me who adore the genre for its raw and energetic sound. I’ll be on the lookout for their full-length and till then this song will stay on my playlist!
