Compilation albums are a great source for finding your next favourite artist! I can firmly say that nearly 30% of the bands I listen to were a part of a year-end compilation album. Another thing that I like about the compilation albums would be the diversity – the assortment of styles that has a distinct sound and theme, something rare on full-lengths as they are primarily based on one theme. Some albums show a different portrayal of your famous Rock or Metal songs – the “Cover Songs”. This is where my heart lies! You get to see how the song might have been performed by another person who has a very different approach to creative songwriting. “The Big Cover-Up” is one of those albums that perfectly does justice to this.
Big Curve Music, home to many local favourites such as 51 Peg, Nova Koloso, The Neuro Farm and Landis Harry Larry brought us “The Big Cover-Up” in November 2021, which is a collection of 10 OG Rock songs played by the budding artists of the current century! Starting with Billy Idol’s “Eyes Without A Face” rendered by 51 Peg, the album quickly progresses and features top tracks originally made by top artists such as Alice In Chains, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Joy Division and many more. I, being a huge fan of Sabbath, was very excited to see “Supernaut” in there. It is a song that is not that well-received among the Rock community compared to their classic hits such as “Paranoid” and “Iron Man”.The label has done a magnificent job on track placements. Although it surely won’t feel like one big album or have the same continuity from a regular album, the flavours of music in each song as we go down is unbelievable. You have 51 Peg playing the first track with an Industrial touch, whereas you get to hear Alice In Chains’ cover song with a perfectly aligned Alt-Rock sound. The highlight, in my opinion, is surely Nova Koloso’s take on “Supernaut”. Excellent deliverance, a perfect drumming and melodic yet Sabbath-esque riffage!Overall, “The Big Cover-Up” is a massive experience for anyone who wants to get a piece of Big Curve Music’s hot talents. I’m taking Nova Koloso and 51 Peg to my playlist – and I will be listening to their albums for the next week. For the rest of the artists – I’m sure over time with each listen my likeness for them will grow and it will taunt me to check their albums as well! Really stoked to see the direction of Big Curve Music’s roster in this year.
