Over the next few years, Albums might become obsolete and bands would prefer to release singles one by one. The reason is the build-up to an album does not match the long term impact it has.
For instance, a band may tease a full length consisting of around 12 tracks with 3 singles released in a couple of months and releasing the rest of 9 tracks altogether the very next week. Business point of view, a band takes around a year or two to write an album, which may only see success in the first week of its release, as the next week some other album from some other band will be released. But if you release singles – it takes around a week or two to write yet, it will stay under the radar for more than a week, which is better than 12 songs in 1 week. But that topic is for another day, as today we will be looking at Cosmopolis and their new track “Nixon-Mason”!
Before you listen to their song you need to know that three members are from three different countries – Australia, Belgium and England. The trio are known for producing dark and haunting tunes, which in fact, are either recorded in different locations – virtually or physically and then mixed in the cloud.
Although the process does sound difficult and inefficient, there is not a single flaw in mastering or mixing “Nixon-Mason”. I didn’t even know this is how they operated until I read through their Bio. Heavily influenced by bands such as Velvet Underground and Massive Attack, it is hard to restrict their genre, as their sound travels through dark waves, post-rock and post-punk.
“Nixon-Mason” is a reflection of the same. Clocking just shy of 6 minutes and 30 seconds, the track sets a moody vibe right from the beginning. Keeping in mind dark sound is not for everyone, Cosmopolis has brilliantly incorporated a very catchy groove through their instrumentation to attract a wider base of people. It is not just their sound that sets a certain vibe, but their newly released music video perfectly encapsulates it. Getting that perfect mix of groovy and gloomy tunes is very commendable, and I can only think of a very few artists who have done it perfectly in the past, albeit not consistently.
Overall, “Nixon-Mason” is a track that will surely introduce you to the world of Cosmopolis and how they operate as a team. The song serves its purpose – giving a taste if what is to come. I, for sure, am very excited to see the direction the band will be taking in their next singles! In fact, I have been following these guys for some time – I covered one of their other singles “Distances”, and at that time too – I was left awestruck on the quality of their music!
