Created in 1986 Immolation is one of the most known and interesting American death metal bands. Of course it wasn't always like that, and in the beginning they recorded a lot of demos, by doing that Immolation was very popular in the death metal underground scene. In 1991 they came out with their first album. It's a classic death metal album, solid, great death metal, simply put…it kicks ass! At that time people like Scott Burns (now a world wide known producent) were at the top of their game. What came out of Burns's work was that for a few years ninety percent of death metal bands in the U.S. sounded nearly the same. It wasn't any different with Immolation's debutant album.
“Dawn of Possession” consists of typical for the beginning of the nineties, death metal music. The rhythm doesn't have any weird changes, only from time to time you hear the song slowing down and heavy guitar playing coming in. But it's not what you'll get on their later albums. Don't get me wrong; “Dawn of Possession” for 1991 is a very good album, top of its class. But since their second album “Here In After” they got us used to twisted and original music, so “Dawn of Possession” looks pale when compared to their other albums. But overall that's good, because we should be worried if it was otherwise. This album is worth buying for true death metal fans.
