Cool Songs: Heathen Foray, Of Forests Uknown

In 2005, FALKENBACH released a momentous Viking Metal album titled “Heralding – The Fireblade.” Mixing biting black metal and powerful, battle-inspiring Viking Metal, this brought FALKENBACH into the glorious ranks of such heralded Viking Metal acts as BATHORY, ENSLAVED, ISENGARD, STORM, and HIMINBJORG. Before “Heralding-The Fireblade” I had never heard of this group. If all their previous efforts sounded like “Ok Nefna Tyvar Ty”, it is obvious why.

“Ok Nefna Tyvar Ty” begins in an interesting fashion. The first couple of songs have a heavenly quality, with much atmosphere and minstrel-like vocals. There in lies the problem. “Ok Nefna Tyvar Ty” never strays away from the sound laid down on the first two tracks. Their sound is captivating through these first two tracks, but midway through the album, it gets tiresome. FALKENBACH does zilch to differentiate each song and the tempo tends to drag along. There are many moments of enchanting keyboards, flutes, lutes and nostalgic vocals, but these moments have to be taken in a song at a time. If you listen to the whole album, from beginning to end, it will all start blending together.

“Ok Nefna Tyvar Ty” was a major disappointment to me after hearing their next album “Heralding-The Fireblade.” FALKENBACH redeemed their selves with the next album earning their spot in the halls of monumental, Oden-worshipping metal. Hopefully, the next album will be even better.
