Cool Songs: In a Deep Silence, Memories through the Shadows
Hailing from Naples, Italy, EMBRACE MY RUIN is a melancholic doom metal band in the tradition of MY DYING BRIDE and fellow Italians, NOVEMBRE. The group pays strong attention to melodies and harmonies through the utilization of clean guitar interludes, keyboards, angelic female vocals, and catchy guitar melodies.
Listeners are apt to notice how closely A Lullaby for a Dying parallels MY DYING BRIDE, especially MY DYING BRIDEs newer, violin-less material. Certain harmonies, their usage of keyboards to create a mournful atmosphere, and the overall style strongly resemble MY DYING BRIDE. This group also appears to be influenced by is NOVEMBERS DOOM, particularly in the deep growling male vocals combined with angelic female vocals and the short, chopping guitar riffing.
There is a lot to like on A Lullaby for a Dying, especially for fans of atmospheric metal and despair-laden doom metal. There are a few problems that cannot go with out mentioning on this album, though. First of all, the poor production really hurts the music, especially the clean instrumental parts. The cymbals are loud and have an annoying, digital-type shrillness, like burning a CD on Windows Media player and not adjusting the settings for a quality recording. In addition, some listeners may not find this as detracting as I did, but the guttural vocals also seem detrimental to the bands overall sound. Its hard to recognize the singers lyrics, which takes away from the bands miserable mood that they are trying to relate.
EMBRACE MY RUIN has the potential to be something special in the depressive doom scene. They write catchy riffs and use the proper elements to make a classic album for this genre. Being a new band (formed in 2006), hopefully the group will stay together long enough to iron out their wrinkles. If they get some label-backed money behind them, especially for recording expenses, they could truly be a force in the doom metal genre. However, its a good showing for the bands first demo.
