Cool Songs: Among Our Glorious Existence, No Heaven Over Germany, Endstilles Reich
Initially overshadowed by barbarian, heathens in the north, the German black metal scene is gaining more and more recognition. Bands such as NARGAROTH , DESASTER, and ABSURD planted early seeds of hate that have obviously grown into small, demonic horde. These demon seeds have blossomed, and mass mayhem will soon ensue. Considering Germanys collective conscious is still attempting to bandage seeping wounds from their sordid past, Germany is an even more likely candidate for the odium that is black metal. Recently signing to Regain Records, ENDSTILLE is obviously taking advantage of this recent black metal pandemic. The groups raw approach should appeal to fans of other Regain artists walking down the same left hand path, namely DARK FUNERAL, MARDUK and GORGOROTH.
ENDSTILLEs focus is similar to the above-named bands. Instead of looking to keyboards, classic instrumentation or female vocals to add vibe, Endstilles Reich attains a gruesome atmosphere through distortion-sprinkling, razor-blade sharp guitars, throat-tearing vocals, and a production that is less than clear. The production doesnt drown out any of the instruments, but the granular ugliness of each instrument, including the vocals, definitely lends a cold, grim ambiance through the albums duration.
Endstille Reich contains the proper lyrical matter for writing music of such a savage, psychotic demeanor. ENDSTILLE covers the typical, anti-Christian genocidal lyrics on The One I Hate and Der Ketzer, but unlike many bands of this sub-genre, does not beat this topic to death. No Heaven Over Germany touches on the bomb raids of the Nazis. Among Our Glorious Existence and the title track take a turn towards inward oblivion. The lyrics book depicts various desolate images pertaining to the songs bleak subject matter.
ENDSTILLEs Regain debut is nothing new. This group follows the path of raw, necro black metal, which looks to production values and searing tones for atmosphere. The pace stays swift for the duration of the album, blasting away at a blistering velocity, yet never reaching the impossible drumbeats per minute or blurred guitar picking of scene masters such as IMMORTAL and MARDUK. Endstille Reich is not for fans looking for something different. This one is for those who carry the sinister spirit of black metal in their cold, black heart.
