For the first time in my entire life I have a pleasure to know a band from Costa Rica. I have Never supposed that in a place situated so far from my country can really exist a metal band, especially band playing such a brutal music. It might seem that a band with such name (as DECEMBER'S COLD WINTER) will present a depressive, dark metal rather than aggressive and complex metal. Another good surprise.
If you compare those Costa Ricans to the representatives of the European metal scene they could be easily compared to the Swedish metal bands where the melody goes hand in hand with the brutality and cathyness. However, we can let off all comparisions and focus on DCW. DECEMBER'S COLD WINTER presents – such as country of their origin – a surprisingly high musical level. What also suprised me is the amount of really strong riffs, richness of themes and motifs, in general terms – how this material is very mature.
Rapid pace, specific, almost dark aura, and the ominous climate simply pour out of speakers. Sometimes it reminds me of the black metal, but not this futile as the Norwegian black metal and other shit, just so melodic and almost epic. They are not as epic as DIMMU BORGIR, but already far closer to CATAMENIA whether, for example, more aggressive version of SOILWORK. So, one word of all forms a coherent melodic whole which although based on the extreme spine is very accessible.
The only thing I do not like is the voice of Alfredo Guzmana. His growl, yelling as if to call it there, I think it do not completely match to the rest. would prefer to Alfredo sing with more than just a feeling than the scream. Besides I have no major objections. Good – and exotic for me metal band.
