Geďst are setting sail for “Galeere”
The release of German avantgarde black metal band Geďst's third album, “Galeere” (engl.: “galley”), is set for May 4th, 2009. After two albums highly lauded by the scene base – the obscure, eccentric, furious, resignative “Patina” (2005) and the warmer, melancholic, autumnal “Kainsmal” (2006) – Geďst herewith clearly outshine their previous works.
In many regards, “Galeere” represents a quantum leap for the six musicians from Bielefeld/Germany: not only does the album contain the most unfathomable and darkest material in the band's history, but also their most atmospheric and epic moments. “This album is the deep sea set to music,” the band's bass player and songwriter Alboin says about the conceptual framework. “It expresses the beautiful forsakenness and infinite extent of the sea as a sanctuary, but also its indomitability and diversity, its threat and hostility.”
The musical characteristics of Geďst such as the elegiac lead guitars, the unique arrangement of the pieces, or the expressive and recognizable vocals of Cypher D. Rex are all firm in place on “Galeere”. The new members of the band, Hedrykk and Larva B. Caneer (guitars) and Faruk (synthesizer), and elements of dark ambient, doom metal, and rock, make sure that the soundscapes of the album's five extra-long tracks are more open and diverse than ever.
Not by any stretch of the imagination could we describe this as an insider's tip from the underground anymore. With “Galeere”, Geďst have finally taped their full potential and are ready to join the ranks of Germany's leading black metal bands.
