HELSTAR – Interview with Larry

As a result of the improving metal climate these last few years, long defunct bands from the 80’s have been giving their dreams another go. Helstar is no exception. One of the few groups to capitalize on the trail blazed by Thrash’s big four, this Texas quintet forged a solid discography across a decade-long career—highlight’s include “Remnants of War” and “Nosferatu”—before calling it quits in the early 90’s. Re-emerging from the depths of obscurity with this year’s “The King of Hell”, a comeback album that won’t win any awards for originality, but whose musical content is a metalhead’s wet dream: soaring vocals, dueling guitars, and a well entrenched melodic foundation. Helstar may be glorifying Satan for album number six, but it’s the heavens that appear to have given the band its new lease on life. Feeling glib and self satisfied, guitarist Larry Barragan keeps Metalcentre up to date on everything about his band.

UNHOLY – Interview with Jarkko

If you don’t know Finland’s Unholy, it’s imperative you read this interview and learn about one of the most influential European Doom bands from the early 90’s. If you do know who Unholy are, then it’s equally important you read this interview—entertained no less by co-founder Jarkko Toivonnen—and get the juice on the new reissues (via Ahdistuksen Aihio Records) that cover their entire discography. Feeling glib and shooting straight, Jarkko guides us through his band’s turbulent history, his own baby, Tiermes, and explains why he hates Metal Hammer.

BURNING SUNSET – Interview with Daniel

With a more open-minded musical identity, Portugal’s Burning Sunset melds classical instruments and melodic death metal to produce a good ole’ heavy metal hybrid in the grand tradition of bands playing nontraditional metal with nontraditional instruments. Releasing their first EP early this year, Burning Sunset’s “Bruma” contains songs that bring epic choruses, vicious growls, folksy influences, and neck breaking thrash all together in a hyper energized aural cocktail. Answering our questions about everything and anything Portuguese, vocalist/violinist Daniel talks about his band, their gigs, and real life burning sunsets.
